Glossary of Terms Acute infection: A suddenly occurring infection that is sharp and severe( unlike Hepatitis C). Adverse events: The negative or less desirable results of taking a medicine; sometimes known as side effects. Alanine aminotransferase ALT (SGPT) : An enzyme released from liver cells. A blood test that reveals ALT levels above normal usually indicates liver damage.Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) Antibody: A protein molecule produced by cells of the immune system in response to natural exposure to-or vaccination against- a particular virus or bacteria. Aspartate aminotransferase - AST (SGOT) Biopsy: Microscopic examination of tissue, usually done by actually removing a small bit of tissue from a patient's body. Blood borne substances: Substances present in the blood and carried throughout the body. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Federal organization concerned with the prevention and control of communicable diseases. Cirrhosis of the liver: Inflammation of the liver, such as infection with HCV. Fibrosis results in the loss of liver cells and increased resistance to the flow of blood to the liver. DNA: It carries hereditary genetic information. Genotype: Genetic type of an organism. Gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT) Hepatic: Related to the liver. Hepatology: A branch of medicine that focuses on diseases of the liver. Immune System: A system by which the body defends itself against invasion by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and malignant cells. Interferon: A protein the body makes as a natural part of it's immune system in a rapid defense against infection. Liver biopsy: Microscopic exam of tissue taken from the liver that is used to look for the presence of liver damage. Myalgia: Muscular pain. Non-responders: Patients who do not respond positively to therapy. Remission: Partial or complete disappearance- or a lessening of the severity-of the symptoms of a disease. Serum: The fluid portion of blood after it has clotted. Plasma: The fluid portion of blood before it has clotted. Side effect: An undesirable effect on the body from a drug or therapy. Subcutaneous Injection: Injection given under the skin. T cells: Cells that reject foreign tissue, regulating cellular immunity, and controlling the production of antibodies. Viral load: The measurement of the amount of a given virus in the bloodstream. Whole-body-rash: A rash that covers much or all of the body.
